Family: Acanthaceae

This is a rarely offered brilliant colored tropical shrub from South America and the West Indies with plumes of rich scarlet on four sided spikes. Each shrimp plant (Justicia) like flower is about 2 inches long. The 6 inch leaves are a bright glossy green. Plant in a bright semi-shaded location. Grows somewhat straggly to a height of 3 feet. To maintain a more compact form, prune back after flowering by removing weak growth and heading back to 2 or 3 strong buds on strongest stems. A well-drained loamy soil and humid tropical growing conditions is best. USDA zones 10-11.
