Giant Burgundy Fountain Grass
Pennisetum macrostachyum Burgundy Giant

Quantity in Basket: None

Family: Poaceae

This fast growing grass with deep burgundy leaves (boldest of the fountain grasses) makes a dramatic background in the perennial border. The clump grows 4 to 5 feet high with large, purple foxtail-like pendulous flower heads. It seldom sets seed, so it's not invasive as some of its smaller cousins. Needs full sun, moisture, and good drainage. Use the stems with leaves and flowers in floral arrangements. The flower heads can also be dried. This tender plant is originally from the East Indies including Borneo and New Guinea and thus cannot take any frost. Propagate by divisions and in colder climates keep the small plants warm over winter to plant out in the spring. USDA zones 9b - 12.
