Anthurium schlechtendalii

Pheasant's Tail, Birdsnest Anthurium
Anthurium schlechtendalii

Quantity in Basket: None

Family: Araceae

Anthurium schlechtendalii is our best guess. Although, it could be a form of Anthurium hookerii. This is a large dramatic bird's nest anthurium. In the wild it's an epiphyte. Its vase shape is composed of bright green leaves more than six feet long and two feet wide. The inconspicuous inflorescence, which has a ripe banana-like fragrance, produces showy red fruit. Use as a tropical landscape accent in a wind protected garden or as a tubbed specimen. Protect from snails. Has survived in Southern California in USDA zone 9 with minimal frost protection. Native Mexico south to Nicaragua.
