Family: Clusiaceae This showy exotic has lovely 1½ inch porcelain white flowers with a dark red center and 3 inch narrow, leathery leaves. In nature it grows as a shrub or small tree to 10 feet high. However, it makes a fine container plant, where its size can be controlled with judicious pruning. Try growing it as a 2 foot container specimen. It starts blooming at a young age and for most of the year, with the flowers holding on for a few days. Grows well in full sun to light shade. It's native to sandy coastal areas of Brazil and Venezuela, so it's tolerant of tropical seacoast conditions, such as wind, drought, and salt air. It's frost tender, so winter protection is necessary in colder climates, with a minimum temperature of 40F. It's well adapted to subtropical and tropical gardens. USDA zones 10 - 12.
