This is commonly called the "Purple Waffle Plant" because of its puckered waffle-like maroon leaves. Grow this colorful plant in hanging baskets, as a filler in containers, or as a ground cover in the tropics. Growing 6 to 9 inches high, it spreads widely as it stems root growing outward. It's best in part shade with moist soil. Although its minimum temperature is probably best above 50F, this cultivar has proven hardier to us than the common silvery Hemigraphis alternata ("Red Flame Ivy"), which does not have the puckered leaves. It can be grown as an annual in cold climates. Native to Malaysia. USDA zones 10 - 12.
