Babaco is the native Ecuadorean name for this mountain papaya hybrid, which is seedless, self-fertile, and accepts cool temperatures. Easily maintained in a 5 gallon container, it is at home in mild climates or in a greenhouse. Large 6 to 8 inch oblong fruits are soft, yellow and fragrant when fully ripe. Basic cultural requirements are bright sun, regular feeding, good drainage, and some dryness between watering, especially during cooler temperatures. Cut back after fruiting to promote new growth. Attractive tropical looking leaves. It is probably a complex hybrid involving Vasconcellea pubescens, V. weberbaueri, and V. stipulata. Hardy to 30F.
